Various techniques to start  Poultry Farming

We can raise large number of poultry birds with high stocking density using free range farming method. Intensive poultry farming method which saves, land, feed, labor and other resources and increases production. When we are using  intensive and free range poultry farming methods we must have to use nationally approved medications like antibiotics  regularly to keep the poultry birds free from diseases.

Layer Poultry Farming

The poultry birds which are raised for egg production are called layer poultry.To start commercial layer poultry farming, we generally keep the hens for 12 months from their first laying period and we look at the environmental conditions which should be controlled according to our weather, presence of light helps the bird for laying eggs earlier.

Broiler Poultry Farming 

The poultry birds  are raised for commercial meat production . In this system the broilers are kept in a large and open house and they become suitable for consumption within their 5 to 6 weeks of age. The broiler breeds which grow slowly and  takes more than 8 weeks for reaching slaughter weight are suitable for raising in this systems. The main difference is that, in organic farming methods the birds are not allowed for randomly using of in-feed or in-water medications, other food additives and synthetic amino acids.

Free Range Farming: 

Free range poultry farming is that providing freely roaming facilities to the poultry birds for a certain period of time per day.For  this system we have to select a suitable land which has the facilities of adequate drainage system, good ventilation, appropriate protection from prevailing winds, good protection from all types of predators and free from excessive cold, heat or dampness. Excessive cold, heat and damp is very harmful for poultry birds and reduce their productivity.

Expanded Organic Method

Organic layer poultry raising method  is also one type of free range farming system. In this organic method we have to choose a certain species of poultry bird which are raised in small group with low stocking density and we should keep about  1000 poultry birds per hector and maximum 2000 birds in each house.

Yarding Method

This commercial  method  is useful for  farmers  in which cows and chickens are raised together. The farmer makes a fence in his yard and keeps all the poultry birds and cattle there together. For this  we have to maintain sufficient space for walk, perch, flap their wings, nest, special feed and water pot etc.In this system the broilers are kept in a large and open house and they become suitable for consumption within their 5 to 6 weeks of age.

Poultry need accurate management and environment for better production and welfare.For sustainable commercial poultry production, planned and proper designed poultry housing is very essential to keep the poultry birds healthy and productive.Most of the farmers do not use heaters to heat the house and depend on the body warmth of poultry birds for heating.The poultry birds consume more feed in winter season, because they need more energy to keep their body warm and keep them free from cold.

Keep a thermometer inside every poultry house for measuring the daily temperature, and always follow the weather forecasts.The poultry birds also need dark period for keeping good health and producing melatonin hormone.Poultry chicks require 24 hours light daily after hatching for finding food and water pot.Whatever you use, always try to use those materials which are healthy for poultry and compost well.

Wet litter causes some problem like sores, and blister on poultry birds and produce ammonia gas which hampers the respiratory system of poultry.In a word, poultry manure is very suitable for make soil fertile and it can be used in organic farming system.

Feeding for poultry birds

 It is the poultry keeper's responsibility to market well-finished birds, and eggs of the best quality, in order to secure maximum returns in relation to feed and other costs.Nature supplies most of these essentials in the form of pasture, bugs and insects, gravel, grains and seeds, sunshine, etc.

Indoor feeding of young or adult poultry, places full responsibility on the attendant to supply these same requirements in some form or another and in adequate but not excessive amounts. Wheat usually is one of the best grains for poultry feeding, although a proportion of course grains in some form should always be included in the ration, along with wheat.In seasons of rust or frost, when wheat is shrunken, more should be ground and fed in mashes and less in the scratch feed.If light, sift out the hulls; poor quality oats frequently have so much hull as to be of little use for poultry feed.Barley will work well as part of the scratch feed and in mashes in crushed, rolled, or finely ground form.They may be higher in price than the whole grain, and if used should be fed for a specific purpose, such bran, shorts or middlings in growing and laying rations, and oat flour, oat middlings, oat feed, or barley meal in fattening rations.Skimmilk and Buttermilk are Excellent for all Classes of Poultry but especially valuable for young chicks, laying hens and fattening birds.Fish Oils are used in chick rations, in winter laying rations and in rations for producing eggs for hatching, as a source of Vitamins A and D when the supply of green pasture and direct sunshine is limited or lacking.

Disease control in poultry farm

If you use equipment for more than one flock, wash and disinfect it before introducing another flock or using it in another building.

Don't keep pet birds on the premises, and avoid contact with other flocks.

To prevent spread of disease, control rodents and insects, keep buildings clean and dispose of dead birds.

Clean and disinfect the facilities in the following manner: Remove all birds from the building.

Clean out the old feed and remove all movable equipment.

Clean equipment and all items to be reused and repair building if needed.

Lock the building and let it stand empty for two to four weeks.

Among growing birds and in adult sudden deaths occur in a dew instances, and are followed by a number of birds showing respiratory symptoms.

The saliva often accumulates in the mouth and obstructs respiration, which results in the production of gurgling disused birds may be soft - shelled and deformed.

Two types of vaccines are available in India, one for the adult birds an another for younger birds or body chicks.

The virus strain for Ranikeht disease vaccine used for adult birds age over weeks was evolved at the Indian veterinary Research Institute.

Vaccination of birds 6 weeks old and above confers immunity for 1 to 2 years.
