What are The Types of Soils of India

All major soils of India: What are The Types of Soils of India

soils of india types

Alluvial soil:

Mostly available soil in India which covers an area of 143 sq.
They are depositional soil - transported and deposited by rivers, streams etc.

Red soil:

Major soil types in India Seen mainly in low rainfall areas.

Black soil/regur soil:

Regur means cotton - the best soil for cotton cultivation.

Organic matters of the soil will be removed fast by the bacteria as it is high temperature and humus will be taken quickly by the trees and other plants.

Desert / arid soil:

Seen under Arid and Semi-Arid conditions.

Peaty/marshy soil:

Areas of heavy rainfall and high humidity.

Lateritic Soils

Lateritic soils are formed from the chemical decomposition of rocks.

These soils mainly contain iron oxide which gives them characteristic pink or red color.

These soils are found in Central, Eastern, and South India.

These are residual soils formed from basalt and have high specific gravity.

These soils are mostly composed of calcite depositions.

Marine deposits

These soils are found in a narrow belt near the south-west coast of India.

These soils have low shearing strength and high compressibility.

They contain a large amount of organic matter and are not suitable for the construction of megastructures like buildings, cranes, etc.
